Born in New York, retired US Navy veteran and packaging machinery development executive, Don Lanigan, now explores his love of literature and art full time in Florida. A graduate of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, he received numerous design awards and company patents. Not surprisingly, he has been recognized throughout his career for innovative concepts in fluid motion, package modules and the clean line appearance of his creations.
No longer confined by the drawing board, Don has begun to apply these same concepts of motion and strong lines to his very abstract art, which now includes the vivid color that had been almost non-existent in his professional drawings.
Even within the pieces displaying minute detail, the line remains distinct, and the colors separate. Very little, if any, color blending is employed. Colors don't wash into each other, and under magnification the lines are intact. The influence of his profession is apparent throughout the images. The color's fluid motion draws your eye along the lines. Often, elements resembling ball bearings, gears, hoses and pipes appear as arms, legs, and heads.
He uses paint pens almost exclusively to create details with lines, shapes and points. Metallic paints are sometimes overlayed to create impact in defined areas. Interestingly, the work takes on a new dimension when viewed at high magnification.
